I've got a new painting in the works. And it's a big one. After a a month and tons of coffee it's just about finished. I wanted to show the process of start to where I am now.
I knew I wanted to do some sort of skeleton on a gondola in an Italian looking setting. So I started to block out the buildings. In the lower right corner I started playing with a color scheme.
Next, I started filling in the background colors. I always do this in blocks. It makes it easy if I want to change something.
The next step is doing a general outline of the main character. I also added a bridge behind him. I got stuck on this step for quite awhile. I didn't know where I wanted to take the background next. Should I make it dark, colorful, simple, detailed. So I spent a week just staring at this.
After spending a lot of time thinking I decided to just go for it and have some fun. I started detailing the bridge in black and white. I do this so I can see what it might look like. It also helps me "see" where the rest of the painting should go.
And this is where I am now. It's a long ways from where I started. I definitely didn't think it would end up this way. It just kind of happened. I still have a few things to do to finish it up. But it's definitely getting there.
The finished painting will be posted Saturday, August 8, 2015, so make sure to check back.
