I used to be absolutely terrified of haunted houses, which is surprising considering my favorite shows were X-Files, Twilight Zone, and anything to do with monsters and aliens. In high school I was on a date and we decided to go to a haunted house. It was one ticket for two separate houses. I made it through the first one by keeping me eyes closed the entire time and begged my date to take me home.
Now, my husband and I have tickets to go to Nashville Nightmare on Valentine’s day and I am so excited. (If you are in the Nashville area there is a Groupon for tickets going on right now). Halloween has become a big deal and we always make a big event of it with homemade costumes and trips to haunted hotels and caves. I think one of the biggest reasons I actually enjoy haunted houses now is due to the show Face Off on the Syfy network.
Face Off is a reality show, makeup artist competition. First, it’s the best reality show I’ve ever seen because it doesn't focus on any drama or general stupidness. Second, the creative abilities of these people is ridiculous. I find it fascinating that these people can do anything. They are really masters of so many different types of art. First they have to think up a character to fit in the story of the challenge, then they sketch the character, then they sculpt the character, and then they paint it and make the costume! There is a lot more to it than that but you get the point.
Face Off is now in its 8th season and I highly recommend it. They do so many different types of characters and you get to see the whole process. Now, as I walk through a haunted house I look at it in a whole new way. I actually look at the actors and wonder if they used foam latex and what prosthetics they have on their face. I admire the paint application and appreciate the small details that go into each scene. A new episode of Face Off airs Tuesday at 9/8c.
I'm Jackie, an artist, illustrator, and friend to ghosts, monsters, and aliens. This blog is full of DIY projects, stories, and things I think are cool. Stay weird.
